Abstract

Pediculosis capitis is a worldwide public health concern. Nits are simply egg casings that may contain a developing embryo or be empty eggs shells. As a result of failure of topical insecticides to be 100 % ovicidal, nit removal has become an important part of head lice therapy. Biochemical analysis has revealed that the nit sheath of the head louse is composed of 4 bands of protein. Bromelain belongs to a group of protein digesting enzymes obtained commercially from the fruit or stem of pineapple (Ananas Comosus). The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of different concentration of bromelain in nit removal in patients with pediculosis capitis. This work indicates that using bromelain in nit removal is a good treatment option as it is effective, natural and safe. Further studies on different concentration of bromelain and treatment durations aiming to distinguish the most effective and safe concentration.
