Abstract

Phytoestrogens (PEs) are bioactive compounds capable of inducing a diverse range of health effects. Among these effects they were proposed to have beneficial effects in cardiovascular diseases, hormone dependent cancers, menopausal symptoms, and bone density, as well as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory effects. The role of phytoestrogens in numerous aspects of human health. One of these compounds is the gossypol. Gossypol [1,1′,6,6′,7,7′-hexahydroxy-5,5′diisopropyl-3,3′dimethyl- [2,2′] binaphthalenyl-[8,8′] dicarbaldehyde] is a polyphenolic dialdehyde, a naturally occurring yellow pigment found in high concentrations in the pigment glands of the cotton plant gossypium.
