Abstract

The present study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of the corpus based program in developing teaching vocabulary and grammar among EFL secondary school teachers. The design of the study was a pre/post test one group study. The participants of the study consisted of 18 secondary school teachers and 120 first year secondary school students from the secondary schools in Assiut, Egypt. To identify the teachers’ perceptions of technology utilization in teaching English language, questionnaires were distributed to some secondary schools. For identifying the most important teaching skills of vocabulary and grammar required for secondary school teachers, a list of teaching skills of vocabulary and grammar (LVG) was developed, and approved by a jury of EFL Curricula and Teaching Methods experts. Then, a pre-post observation checklist (OCVG), a pre-post knowledge assessment (KAT) for teachers and a pre-post vocabulary and grammar test (VGST) for students were developed. Teachers were pre-tested using the observation checklist and the knowledge assessment. Then, they were taught through the corpus-based program. After that, they were post-tested using the same tools (observation checklist and knowledge assessment). The students were pre-tested using vocabulary and grammar test. Then their teachers taught them a number of lessons using the tools of the corpus-based program. Finally, the students were post-tested using the vocabulary and grammar test. The results of the study showed that, there was a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the pre-test and post-test of the teachers’ group at 0.01 in the observation checklist and knowledge assessment in favor of the post- assessment, and this difference can be attributed to using the corpus based program in developing teaching vocabulary and grammar. Also, there was a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the pre-test and post-test of the students’ group at 0.01 in the vocabulary and grammar test in favor of the post-test. Hence, it was concluded that the learning skills of vocabulary and grammar among students were improved as a result of developing their teachers’ teaching skills.
