Abstract

The fifth edition of (WHO 2010) semen analysis manual provides the lower reference limits of semen parameters. Several studies to assess the semen parameters among fertile men were conducted across the world and many studies have indicated geographical differences in semen quality. Until now Egyptian semen reference is not yet settled .The aim of this study is to determine the different sperm parameters of proven fertile men in Beni- Suef Governorate. A total of 200 fertile men , whose wives were pregnant or delivered within one year at time of semen collection , provided a semen sample each after sexual abstinence for 3 to 5 days and analyzed by computer assisted semen analysis (CASA) .Semen analysis was performed according to WHO-criteria, with the exception of morphology, which was analysed according to Tygerberg’s strict criteria.
Results showed that semen quality of fertile Egyptian men is comparable to that of WHO (2010) regarding the mean values but variable regarding the fifth percentile as a lower limit for WHO (2010). The fifth percentile for semen volume , sperm concentration and normal sperm morphology ( 1.8ml, 20.85 million/ ml ,7.58% respectively) were higher than WHO reference (1.5 ml , 15 million/ml , 4% respectively) but the fifth percentile for total sperm motility and progressive sperm motility (34.45 % , 27.7 % respectively) were below WHO lower limit ( WHO reference 40% , 32% respectively). There is no significant difference in semen parameters between the age groups, (p- value is greater than 0.5).
In conclusion the reference ranges for semen variables among Egyptian population are coinciding with WHO (2010) parameters except for motility . No statistically significant correlation between semen parameter and age groups.
Future studies on larger group of fertile Egyptian males are needed to establish national parameters , however the current results may serve as a guidance values for future studies on semen quality in Egypt.
