Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women & is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women ( after lung cancer ). This is a non-systematic review study to examine screening, identification of risk factors of B.C. in females.
The current study is aiming at improving the care provided by family physician to women at risk of B.C. & to identifying and quantifying the risk factors of B.C.
Internet will be searched for publications in the literature & journals that have studied B.C. data were collected from websites and the tables were constructed from it. Graph charts were designated by the use of Excel computer program.
B.C. is influenced by multiple risk factors which can be classified as follows :
1. family history/genetic backgrounds.
2. reproductive factors due to hazardous effects of hormonal exposure such as early age of menarche, late age at menopause, few No. of children & null parity, late age at 1st birth, little or no breastfeeding & long term use of HRT.
3. History of benign proliferative breast disease.
4. Obesity.
The common symptoms & signs are : breast mass ( common cause of presentation ), nipple discharge, nipple changes, skin dimpling & lymphadenopathy.
For early B.C. detection women age 40 yrs. & older should have screening mammogram every year & should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. women in 20s & 30s should have CBE by health professional every 3yrs & after age 40 should have it yearly. BSE is an option for women starting in their 20s.
Main types of treatment for B.C. are : surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy & hormonal therapy.
The study recommends establishment of breast assessment clinics in different primary health care units are important to boost the awareness & screening procedures.
Study the topic is very important because of the psychological and physical impact on so many of our pts. With B.C. and the staggering cost the disease imposes on our health care system. And try to help family physician to use an update approach for early detection & management of breast cancer.
