Abstract

The general objective of the present study was raising awareness about osteoporosis among secondary school female students. This was achieved through assess osteoporosis knowledge, attitude and practice among Egyptian adolescent females about healthy life style for its’ prevention of osteoporosis and evaluate their knowledge, attitude and practice of interventional education program about osteoporosis delivered to them.
The study was conducted in secondary school in Shebin El-kom city which was represented by three governmental schools (New Secondary School for girls, Old secondary School for girls and Ideal Language Secondary schools). The questionnaires were administered to whole-class of selected classes including five classes from Old secondary School for girls, four classes from New Secondary School for girls, two classes from Ideal Language Secondary schools. Scoring of knowledge and practice (KP) was based on true answers of the questions:
- Good KP if total score > or equal 75 % of answers were true.
- Fair KP: if total score 50 %:75% of answers were true.
- Poor KP if total score < 50% of answers were true
While grading of attitude parameters based on true answers of attitude questions and was grading as:-
- Positive attitude if total score ≥ 5 %
- Negative attitude if total score < 50%.
The present study shows that students’ knowledge, Attitude and practice is fair.
After three month evaluation of the health educational program was done with the same questionnaire only 294 students respond out of 302 students had the program (with response rate of 97.35%). Major of the participants didn’t recognized that women,

anorexia, lack of vit D intake and family history of osteoporosis increase the risk of osteoporosis, majority of students didn’t know that ice cream, backed beans, tinned sardines and spinach is a good source of calcium and 77.8% of student didn’t know the recommended daily amount of calcium. About 80.5% of student didn’t know the amount of milk needed daily after the educational program the knowledge is improved and also affect on attitude and practice of the students, the mean of risk factor knowledge was significantly increased from 22.97±5.58to 35.2±2.89. Mean of diagnosis of disease knowledge increased from4.15±1.46 to 9.24±1.76 and mean of nutrition and physical activity knowledge increased from 19.75± 2.01 to 23.74± 1.77. Mean of importance of Ca containing food and Barriers to have Ca increase from 22.23 ± 5.1 to 31.17 ± 3.76, mean of health intentions increased from 16.64±5.36 to 29.38± 3.1, means of regular exercises and barriers to exercise increase from 22.26± 6.38 to 33.01±3.88, means of healthy and nutritional practice increase from 64.25±8.65 to 72.65±8.34, and means of regular exercise increase from 8.97±2.42 to 9.35±2.
This study also helps to highlights areas where it is needed to work on to improve awareness about osteoporosis among secondary school female students through studying knowledge, attitude and practice of adolescent female toward osteoporosis. The results of this study represented a gap in knowledge, attitude and practice among adolescent regarding osteoporosis.
The knowledge, attitude and practices of adolescent can be improved by mass media program for osteoporosis, health educational program for the importance of healthy lifestyle and its benefit effect on bone health including walking practice, weight bearing exercise, Importance of consume healthy high calcium and vitamin D diet, avoid soda & fast food and maintain active life style.
