Abstract The present study aimed at investigating the effect of a suggested ESP program based on active learning strategies on developing oral communication skills- listening and speaking skills- among Hotel Studies Department students. Based on a needs analysis questionnaire, a pre-post oral communication skills test was developed. In addition, a suggested ESP program based on some active learning strategies was designed in light of students’ needs. Participants of the experimental study (N = 60) were randomly chosen from fourth year students enrolled in the Hotel Studies Department, Faculty of Tourism and Hotels, Sadat City University, during the second semester of the 2012- 2013 academic year. They were divided into two groups: an experimental group (n = 30) and a control one (n = 30). Both groups were tested before and after conducting the experiment. The experiment lasted for 10 weeks during which the experimental group students were exposed to the suggested program while the control group students received regular instruction. Results revealed that the experimental group students achieved significant gains in oral communication skillslistening and speaking skills. Thus, the suggested ESP program proved to be effective in developing students’ oral communication skills. |
