Abstract

The temporomandibular joint is closely related anatomically to the external acoustic meatus and clinical conditions of the joint may produce symptoms of pain that must be distinguished from those directly associated with the ear.
This study seeks to show some reasonable anatomical and pathophysiological connections between TMDS such as headache, myofacial Pains and aural symptoms like tinnitus, vertigo, otic fullness, otalgia and and others.
This study was carried out to clarify the association between aural symptom and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in 50 patients from both genders above 20 years old, referred to the department of otolaryngology, Head and Neck surgery in Ain shams university hospital complain from Temporomandibular signs and symptoms such as myofascial pain, dysfunction, internal derangement associated with one or more aural complain such as tinnitus, vertigo, otalgia, and ear fullness. And to show radiological findings in this patient.
In this study full ENT history.and examination, TMJ examination, including radiological imaging, magnetic resonance images for evaluation of disk positions.
The results showed that TMD signs and symptoms and associated aural symptom were mostly occurs in females thanmales and younger subjects due to psychological or hormonal causes. Also showed that (80-85%) of patient had myofaciol pain and headache.
The present study indicates that the most aural symptom occured are otalgia, tinnitus, vertigo and ear fullness respectively.
Radiological examination (MRI) of TMJ reveals that (44%) of our patient are associated with internal derangement and also the TMJ internal derangement occurs in different stages mostly occur in stage IV,also highly significant correlation with otalgia and tinnitus also is significant with ear fullness.
In the present study we found overlapping symptomatology between TMD, aural symptom, and psychological and hormonal problems. It appears that there may be a large “symptom, suggesting that the decision to consult other specialists may depend on symptom severity in combination with complex psychological and social influences.
