Abstract This study aimed to assess the behavioral and psychological disturbance in patients with beta thalassemia major whether with complications or without complications. This study was conducted on 50 patients with beta thalassemia major (20 with complications and 30 without complications) in hematology clinic in Ain Shams University Hospital. 50 healthy children were taken as controls, with matched age and sex to the study group. Exclusion criteria for both patients and controls were history of CNS disease, any neurological disease or neurocognitive dysfunction. All patients were subjected to careful history taking, thorough clinical examination and investigations which included CBC in last 3 months and mean serum ferritin in last year. The patients group and controls underwent behavioral assessment using pediatric behavior rating scale (PBRS-P). The results of the study revealed that all patients had significantincrease of all behavior disturbances when compared to controls. When we compared patients and controls of the same age group, the results showed all patients to fall the category of at risk or clinical significant disease including atypical behavior, irritability, grandiosity, hyperactivity, aggression, affect disorder, and social interactive behavior. On comparing thalassemic subjects with complications to those without coplications, both groups were comparable for all behavioral components of PBRS-P, except for significantly higher proportion of patients in complicated group who had more aggression, inattention and disturbed social inter actions. |
