Abstract

Adolescence is generally considered as a time of transition from childhood to adulthood, a period of physical and psychological changes associated with puberty. The adolescents aged 10-19 years about 1.2 billion in 2011 constituting 18% of the total world population. Adolescence has been shown to be an important period of changes, both physiological and psychological. During this time, changing lifestyle and dietary habits affect dietary requirements.
Adolescents’ pregnancy is a global concern because they are biologically and emotionally immature; Pregnancy predisposes them to pregnancy related complications. For adolescents, the physiological adjustments are two‐fold; adolescent growth and physiological changes of pregnancy both need to be taken into consideration.
Adolescent pregnancy is a major challenge for many countries especially in developing countries. Adolescent pregnancy introduces a multitude of concerns for both the mother and fetus; one of them is nutritional risk. When adolescent becomes pregnant, she needs enough nutrients to support her fetus and her own continued growth as well as her physical development. For this reason the diet of the pregnant adolescent needs to be tailored and carefully managed.
