Abstract The blockage of storm water street inlets is considered one of the most serious problems that face storm water drainage system used in Egypt. This study gains its value through discussing and come out with a new system using permeable material at the shoulder of the road that ensure having a considerable durability and permeability properties that allows it to be used as roads pavement material. This study analyses the permeability and durability characteristics of proposed materials which are plastic grid pavers, permeable interlocking concrete pavers and no fine concrete, the analyses were undertaken by conduction a number of standard tests. This study concerns with the usage of the no fine concrete material as a pavement material since the plastic grid pavers and permeable interlocking concrete pavers proposed materials are not achieved the minimum strength to withstand the traffic load and due to the availability in the local market with a competitive cost compared with the existing systems. The tests conducted on six no fine concrete mixtures to determine the compressive strength, abrasion resistance, acid resistance and permeability properties and compared between the results to achieve with the optimum mix design. It was noticed that no fine concrete possess a considerable durability and permeability properties that allow it to act as a pavement material carrying the traffic load and assure the drainage efficiency. The study conducted a hydrological analysis to create a design model based on the results of no fine concrete properties and the rainfall quantities. Also the study recommends using the design model procedures to get the optimum drainage section maintaining the road shoulder width with or without the pipe drains. |
