Abstract Background: Older adults are at an increased risk for medication errors due to increased numbers of medications needed to treat multiple chronic conditions and this, coupled with age related changes in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. The study aim: was to determine the effect of medication errors on the elderly health. Subjects: Purposive sample of 200 elderly patients who have one or more chronic disease and take medication for a long period and all of them were exposed to medication errors. Setting: The study was conducted at medical outpatient clinics of Menouf public (general) hospital. Tool of the study: An interviewing questionnaire was developed by the researcher to assess the type of error the subjects exposed with and assess its effect on subject’s health. It included five parts. Results: all of the studied subjects exposed to medication errors such as wrong medication, wrong dose, wrong time and /or frequency, drug-drug interaction, taking nonprescribed medication and not follow the precautions. The majority (88.5%) of the studied subjects had health problems related to medication errors such as gastrointestinal problems, nervous problems, limbs swelling, skin rashes, sweating and hypothermia. Conclusion: Female and illiterate subjects were significantly had medication error than male. The patient is responsible about almost all medication errors that were exposed to and gastrointestinal and nervous problems were the most health effects of medication errors. Recommendations: Audiovisual instructions about prescribed medication should be teached to elderly patient and their care givers to help them avoid the medications errors.
