Abstract

The aim of this work was to study the effect of Ricobendazole on fertility in male rats. Some biochemical, hematological as well as histopathological studies were also evaluated. In this work rats were divided into 3 equal groups, each consists of 15 rats. The first group was given propylene glycol 2 ml / kg b.wt s.c.injection. The second group was given 7.5 mg / kg b.wt. of Ricobendazole s.c .injection The third group was given 7.5 mg / kg b.wt. Ricobendazole s.c.injection twice with 3 week interval. Five rats from each group were sacrificed after 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks from the beginning of drug administration for pharmacodynamic studies The obtained results are summarized as follows: 6.1. Effect of Ricobendazole on fertility of male rats: 6.1.1. Effect of Ricobendazole on index weight of male reproductive organs: Rats of 2nd and 3rd group showed significant decrease in testes index weight allover the experimental period as compared with control. While there was a significant decrease in epididymis index weight and accessory sex glands at the 4th and 8th week of experiment in treated groups as compared with control. 6.1.2. Effect of Ricobendazole on semen characters: Ricobendazole induced a significant decrease in sperm motility and sperm count all over the experiment period as compared with control, There was a significant increase in sperm abnormalities allover the experiment period as compared with control. 6.1.3. Effect of Ricobendazole on testosterone: Ricobendazole induced a significant decrease in testosterone level in single and repeated dose group at 4th and 8th week of experiment as compared with control. 6.2. Effect of Ricobendazole on hematological pictures: Ricobendazole induced a significant decrease in Hb % and WBCs count in repeated dose group at 4th week of experiment in repeated dose group. There was a significant decrease in RBCs count and PCV % in single dose group at the 2nd week and in repeated dose group at the 2nd and 4th week of experiment as compared with control. 6.3. Effect of Ricobendazole on some biochemical parameters: Rats treated with Ricobendazole (7.5 mg/kg B. wt.) as a single or repeated dose showed a significant increase in serum ALT, AST and ALP allover experimental period as compared with control. There was a significant decrease in albumin and total protein level allover experiment period in both groups while there was significant decrease in globulin level at the 2nd and 4th week of experiment as compared with control. Ricobendazole produced an increase in Serum urea and creatinine at the 4th week of experiment in repeated dose group as compared with control.6.4. Effect of Ricobendazole on the index weight of some internal organs:There were insignificant changes in internal organs weight (spleen, heart, brain, liver, and kidney) in treated groups as compared with control.6.5. Histopathological effects of Ricobendazole:Ricobendazole induced many histopathological changes in testes, accessory sex organs, the liver, the kidney and the spleen.
