Abstract Nutritional anemia is widely prevalent in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries. In Egypt, as in other developing countries, anemia is an important public health problem. Although many nutrients and co-factors are involved in the maintenance of a normal hemoglobin concentration, the most common nutrient deficiency in nutritional anemia from the public health point of view is iron deficiency (I.N.A.G.G., 1977). Increasing evidence suggests that iron deficiency per se, even in the absence of obvious anemia, may affect health. About 85 per cent, of the anemias encountered among rural labourers in hot, damp, tropical regions respond to iron therapy (Fay & Kondi, 1957). A remarkable improvement in health, happiness and efficiency can be quickly and cheaply obtained if the condition is recognized and correctly treated. Hence, it is important to know the causes of the disease, to apply the appropriate measures for its prevention and treatment |
