Abstract INTRODUCTION_ Hemiplegia is the name given to unilateral paresis of limbs which commonly affects the upper limb more severely than the lower limb (Stork, 1978). In children the hemiplegia may be congenital or acquired. The condition can be present from birth (congenital hemiplegia), when it may be due to a congenital cystic deformity of one cerebral hemisphere or possibly to infarction occurring in utero. AcqUired hemiplegia usually develops acutely during, the first few years of life as a complication to a number of postnatal condi tiona (Vial ton, 1975). The term congenital is self explanatory and related to prenatal factors (congenital anomalies, prenatal infections) or to perinatal factors (prematurity, birth trauma or perinatal infections). The factors underlying acquired hemiplegia seldom are identified although many possible aetiologies have been suggested. The most common pathological cause is infarction due to either arterial or venous occlusion (Walton, 1975). |
