Abstract

This work was performed to investigate the effect of taurine on streptozotocin induced diabetic male rats and the possible mechanism of its actio 40 male rats were divided into four groups (10 rats each): (group1: control group) received only water orally as vehicle, (group2: taurine treated group) received only taurine (500 mg/kg) daily orally for 21 days dissolved in water, (group 3 : diabetic group) induced by a single dose of streptozotocin (55mg/kg) intraperitonealy, (group4 : taurine-treated diabetic) group received taurine (500 mg/kg) daily orally dissolved in water from the 4th day after streptozotocin (STZ) injection for 21 days Results: After 21 days of treatment with taurine, taurine treated group showed insignificant changes in serum fasting glucose, serum insulin, insulin sensitivity (HOMA S%), serum total cholesterol, serum HDL, serum LDL , liver MDA level, liver catalase activity and liver caspase-3 level .While, taurine treated diabetic group showed significant decrease in serum fasting glucose, serum total cholesterol, serum LDL, liver MDA and liver caspase_3.However, there was significant increase in serum insulin level, serum HDL and catalase activity in liver tissue with insignificant changes in insulin sensitivity Conclusion: We conclude that taurine has anti-diabetic effects which may be due to its anti-hyperglycemic, anti-hyperlipidemic, antioxidant and anti-apoptotic effects. Thus, taurine supplementation may develop a new therapeutic approach in treating.
