Abstract INTRODUCTION AND AIM OF WORK ** ====================================== Chronic liver disease is an important task that needs various modes of investigations to determine the degree of liver affection and sequalae of its long standing disorder. Clinical and laboratoy tools have been used for long times to assess liver cell function and disease progress. With the development of Nuclear Medicine, functional images are now obtainable by various radionuclides. These add to the known liver functional tests and provide a new approach towards the assessment of liver function. Radio-labelled colloids can assess the reticulaendothelial patency of the liver and spleen and the pattern of tracer uptake and distribution between the two organs is directly related to the efficacy of Kupffer cell population. On the other hand, Technetium-99m labelled HIDA compounds (hepatic imino diacetic acid) are employed to assess the functional integrity of the hepato-biliary system. Tc-99m HIDA compounds when injected intravenously, are taken up by the hepatocytes, and then excreted in bile. Sequential imaging allows to obtain functional images of the various phases Therefore, the of tracer journey inside the biokinetics of the injected tracer body. can be followed and imaged. A normal scintigraphic pattern depends on a healthy population of hepatocytes. 1 |
