Abstract Okra (Hibiscus esculentus L.) is one of the important vegetable crops in A.R. Egypt. In 1980, area devoted to okra was 11131 feddans and its productivity was about 65947 tons*. The local cultivar i.e., Balady is widely spread in cultivation. lt is a low yielding cultivar, late maturing and its edible pods contain a high per cent of fibres. Little attention was paid to okra improvement in Egypt. The genetic information of its characteristics is needed for planning accurate and efficient breeding programs to obtain high yielding cultivars with better quality. |
