Abstract

Introduction: Further information is needed to ensure the beneficial effect of pre TURP short term finasteride therapy on reduction of peri-operative bleeding especially on larger prostates and to assess the overall effect on TURP outcome and the underlying histopatholgocial changes that may account for such effects.
Method: Comparing the TURP outcome regarding intra-TURP bleeding (calculated by estimation of intraoperative serum Hb., Hb. conc. In irrigating fluid and total volume of irrigating fluid used) and also comparing other clinical parameters in addition to assessment of morphometric changes in TURP specimen in between two groups of patient; one group of 12 patients received finasteride 5 mg daily for 6 weeks before TURP and control group of 15 patient received no medication before TURP.
Results: there was no add on advantages of Finasteride therapy as regard clinical outcome parameters other than bleeding, but, finasteride therapy lead to significant reduction of hemoglobin loss in the irrigating fluid, intra- and post-operative bleeding and bleeding per resected gram of tissue also with significant increase of amount of resected tissue in shorter duration with marked decrease in intraoperative needs for blood transfusion.
