Abstract Chlorine is the most widely used disinfectant which react with organic matter present in water, this reaction gives rise to the formation of by products (THMS) i.e. chloroform. Chloroform has a harmful effect on human health; it can cause hepatic and renal toxicity in adult female rat and humans via formation of free radical and other mechanisms. The aim of the current study was to characterize the adverse effects of chloroform via evaluation of liver and kidney functions, oxidative stress parameters in adult female rats. In addition, evaluating the protective effect of curcumin extract on the same parameters of rats intoxicated with chloroform. Rats were randomly assigned to five groups; each contained a group of 12 rats. Group I served as control, Group II intoxicated with chloroform, Group III treated with curcumin, Group IV served as pretreatment and Group V served as co- treatment.Blood sample were collected for estimations of the following: 1- Alanine aminotransferase enzyme activity (ALT). 2- Aspartate aminotransferase enzyme activity (AST). 3- Albumin concentration. 4- Urea concentration. 5- Creatinine concentration. 6- Total bilirubin concentration. |
