Abstract

Anemia is one of the most common and intractable nutritional
problems in the world today. It has consequences on human health,
social and economic development.
WHO estimates that the most common cause of anemia is iron
deficiency anemia (IDA). It occurs when storage sites of iron are
depleted and blood level of iron cannot meet daily needs, The incidence
of anemia in Egypt (as a developing country) is much higher than
developed countries, so the present study aimed to investigate the
frequency of IDA in the outpatient clinic of Ashmoon hospital and
Shebeen Elkom Universal Hospital in Menufiya Governorate,Egypt.
The study was carried out from Juli 2012 to February 2013, in the
outpatient clinic of Ashmoon hospital and Shebeen Elkom district in
Menufiya Governorate .
A total of 147 infants aged 6 months to 24 month were enrolled in
the study.
All infants were subjected to the following:
1-Full history
2-Anthropometric measurements
3-Thorough clinical examination
4-Socioeconomic status of the infants and their families,
5-Mother’s education;
6-Investigation:
1-CBC
2-Serum iron
3-Serum ferritin
4-TIBC
Our results showed that, 84 (57.1%) infant out of the total studied
group (147 infants) were found to have iron-deficiency anemia.
According to gender, the frequency of iron deficiency anemia
among girls was 51.2% which is higher than that found among boys
48.8%.
According to type of feeding ,the frequency of iron deficiency
anemia among cow milk fed infant was 96% which is higher than that
found among breast fed 66.2% and lowest among infant fed on fortified
formula 25.5%.
The frequency of IDA was high among infants with low
socioeconomic standards and less educated mothers.
