Abstract This study was conducted on 1600 full term pregnant women, delivered at Ain Shams Maternity Hospital, in February-June 1988. The aim is to set the norms for birth weight in this groups of women. The Criteria of Selection: 1. Singleton pregnancy. 2. Menstrual age between 38 and 42 weeks. 3. The neonats have been seen within 8 hours after delivery. 4. Both parents were Egyptians from widely varying socio-economic class. 5. Ir..fants with congenital anomalies or any gross pathological condition were excluded, also the infants whose mothers suffered from chronic illness or pre-eclampsia. The following procedure was followed: As regards the mother: 1. careful history taking. 2. Clinical examination. 3. Grine analysis for sugar and protein. As regards the neonate: 1. Birth weight estimation within 8 hours after delivery. 2. Determination of the sex. In this study, the following results were obtained: The mean birth weight was 3583 + 418 grams. The birth weight increases with the increase of the maternal age except in the age group 40 years may be due to the small number of cases represented in this group, or due to sclerotic lesions in the myometrial arteries which leads to uteroplacental underperfusion. The birth weight increased with parity and cases of increased maternal hemoglobin level. Male babies were found to be heavier than the female babies. The birth weight was increased with the increase in the maternal weight and height. The Que t e 1 e t index ( weight/height2 ) was used to determine the women’s body mass at the time of delivery. Maternal obesity was found to be one of the factors responsible for the increase of the infant’s birth weight as the infants of the obese worr:en were on the average 236 grams heavier than those of the non obese The incidence of the macrosomic babies was found to be higher in the obese women than in the non obese. The birth weight was found to increase as the social class is lowered except in the social class I due to small number of cases represented in this group, while it was decreased in the cigarette smoking mothers in comparison with the non smokers. |
