Abstract

sleep disordered breathing in children ranges in severity from snoring caused by partial obstruction of the airway to obstructive
sleep apnea which is caused by episodes of complete airway
obstruction.
Clinical risk factors associated with SDB include nightly snoring,
witnessed apneas, male gender, age less than ٥ years, adenotonsillar
hypertrophy, chronic nasal obstruction, family history of snoring,
exposure to cigarette smoking and obesity.
The most objective test for the diagnosis and quantification of
SDB is polysomnography (sleep study).
SDB is most commonly seen in children between ٣ and ٦ years
of age. It is also more common in children suffering from obesity,
craniofacial, genetic or neuromuscular disorders.
Adenotonsillectomy remains the main stay of treatment for
pediatric OSA, whether diagnosed by clinical suspicion alone or by
PSG in the more complex cases.
The aim of this work was to determine the prevalence of SDB
among children in Menoufiya University Outpatient Clinic.
This study was conducted on ٥٠٥ Egyptian children; ٢٦٧ males
(٥٢٫٨٪) and ٢٣٨ females (٤٧٫٢٪). Their age ranged from ٤ to ١٢
years.
All cases were subjected to SDB questionnaire and positive
cases were subjected to:A) SDB questionnaire.
B) Brief history, including age, sex, name & residence.
C) Clinical examination which included weight, height and
inspection of the pharynx to detect tonsil enlargement.
D) Lateral view neck x-ray.
Results of our study:
- The most prevalent symptom of SDB was snoring loud
during sleep.
- Prevalence of SDB among children included in our study
was ٨٫٥٪.
- The mean age for positive groups for SDB was ٤ to ٦ years.
- The symptom of snoring loud during sleep was the most
prevalent symptom among positive group with percentage of
١٠٠٪ but not present among negative group with percentage
of ٠٪.
- The symptom of stop breathing during sleep was equally not
present in either positive or negative groups with percentage
٠٪ in both groups.
- The SDB symptoms are more prevalent between males more
than females with percentage of ٥٨٫١٪ between males more
than females with percentage of ٥٨٪ between males and
٤١٫٩٪ between females.
- The mean weight in positive group is ١٧٫٩ kg and the mean
weight in negative group is ٢٥٫٦ kg.
- The main observed sign in examining the positive group was
tonsil enlargement with percentage of ١٠٠٪.
- The main finding in lateral view neck X-ray in positive group
was adenotonsillar enlargement with percentage of ٩٣٪.
