Abstract
Mastectomy due to breast cancer is one of the most severe traumas a woman can experience in her lifetime. Women perceive themselves as mutilated, diseased, and unsightly, they encounter many physical, psychosocial and sexual problems. The aim of the present study was to assess the problems experienced by women underwent mastectomy and find out the impact of counseling program for women after mastectomy. Two research designs were used in the present study; descriptive and intervention design. Two types of sample were selected for this study, a random sample of post-mastectomy patients (3 months after the operation) (n=300) and a purposive sample of 50 post-mastectomy patients (study and control groups) before their discharge from the hospital. The results of the present study revealed that post-mastectomy patients were vulnerable to physical, psychosocial and sexual problems and those receiving the counseling program were significantly (p<0.05) better able to cope with the confronted problems than those who had not
received the program. It can be concluded that, planned counseling
program services decreases the frequency or duration of the post
mastectomy problems and increase women’s awareness regarding their
self care management. The study recommended a need to increase
patient’s awareness concerning their self care management after the
operation and to learn how to cope with problems encountered.
