Abstract

Multicentric Breast Cancer is an alarming finding and as breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor among females all over the world, including Egyptian females, so good clinical assessment is very important in estimating the probability of the presence of multicentricity which influences the selection of the options and hence the prognosis of the patients, and the multidisciplinary approach for treatment.
It should be born in mind that carcinoma of the Breast may be multicentric in origin, and could be a whole organ process. So determination of multicentricity must be taken seriously.
The detection of mulicentricity of breast cancer is based mainly upon the following:
* Thorough examination, mammography findings and detailed pathological examination.
* In this series, the work included 50 female patients presenting with carcinoma of the female breast. The age incidence ranged from 45-60.
* All patients were subjected to the following:
1. History taking which included personal history, complaint of patients, present, past and family history.
2. Full clinical examination, which included general examination and local examination of the breast.
3. Mammography was done for most patients (Cranio-candal and mediolateral and oblique views for each breast).
4. Modified Radical Mastectomy was done for 48 cases and 2 radical mastectomy operations for 50 patients after pre-operational assessment and detailed pathological examination according to the protocol outlined by the pathologist.
- The whole breast (four quadrants, a central part containing the nipple and auxiliary tail) was sectioned and paraffin blocks were prepared from the grossly suspicious areas, sectioned, strained and examined pathologically.
(See materials and methods)
- The incidence of multicentricity was detected by this study in 19 specimens out of 50 (38%). Mutlticentricity was correlated with various clinical and pathological factors including age of patient, tumor size, site, histopathologic type of tumor and grading, modal metastases and results mammography.
