Abstract

In this thesis, a successful design for the brushless doubly fed reluctance machine (BDFRM) has been developed, analyzed and tested. A sound basis for design of the BDFRM is first derived with the aid of the concept of spatially modulated revolving field. Dynamic and steady state Performance characteristics of the BDFRM in different modes of operation are presented. Furthermore, some important aspects of the machine performance in different modes of operation are highlighted.
Special attention is focused on the start up and synchronization of the machine under scalar v/f control. Moreover, effects of both voltage and frequency of the control winding on the machine performance are studied in detail. It has been found that with proper control of the secondary winding current frequency, the BDFRM behaves in a similar way as a non-salient synchronous machine and closed-loop control can be achieved with a greatly reduced sized power converter.
A control technique by which the machine can be successfully controlled over a wide range of speed is developed. For this purpose, a 3-phase PWM power inverter, 6/2-pole stator, 0.75 hp BDFRM prototype system with a digital signal processor (DSP) based controller was built and tested to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control technique.
Digtial simulation studies have been carried out for the proposed analysis and the results are compared to those of a practical one.
