Abstract

First fold is studying ABET criteria and comparing it with other criteria in engineering education to stand on its advantages and drawbacks and presenting suggestions to increase the ability of ABET to improve the engineering programs.
Second fold is to measure the industrial engineering (IE) program at Fayoum University to determine the gap between ABET outcomes and skills required and the outcomes that program presented to students. This measurement was carried by three different surveys: Staff members, Alumni and Graduates surveys. The result of the surveys are validated by using triangulation technique and showed that the program achieved 57% outcomes and skills.
Third fold is to determine the factors affecting student achievement and using six sigma methodology to improve the curriculum of IE program based on comparing the program curriculum with benchmarking curriculum for four universities in USA.
The improvement includes a decision about the omitted, grouped and added courses to the curriculum. The results show that if these improvement on curriculum is applied the program can achieve 79% of ABET outcomes.
Six sigma methodology is used also to improve material science course which is model to improve other courses with same approach .The results show that the average grades of students 109 but the process is not capable because all action plan did not be applied totally as the time of term is short as students reported at asked questionnaires.
The thesis is divided into six chapters:
Chapter one is about problem statement and importance of study. It also contains literature review for the discipline of whole study.
Chapter two is about studying American, Japanese, Malaysian and Egyptian criteria outcomes and comparing between them to choose the best of them.
Chapter three is about deep study of ABET outcomes, their definition, attributes, elements, teaching techniques and plan to be implemented at both program and course level. It also includes the modification of ABET outcomes to overcome the mentioned drawbacks at chapter one.

Chapter four is about measuring IE program at Fayoum University against ABET outcomes using surveys. The surveys are validating by triangulation technique.
Chapter five is talking about factors affects students achievement which are: curriculum, instructors, students, educational process and educational environment. AHP technique is used to weight each factor; the result is curriculum has highest weight with 50% of whole factors weights.
Chapter six is about applying six sigma methodology to analysis and improve both IE curriculum and \material science. course.
