Abstract
Birth order plays a substantial role in individual life because the family is the first social system to which an individual is exposed. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of birth order on anxiety and depression among adolescents. The study design was descriptive corelational. Data were collected using three tools; a semi – structured interview schedule sheet, Beck depression scale and Taylor anxiety scale. Setting ; The study was conducted at two secondary schools at El- Batanoon, Shebin EL-Kom Menoufiya Governorate. Sample; Multi-stage random sample consisted of all available students from the two schools fulfilling the inclusion criteria.. The results revealed that there is no statistically significant relation between student’s birth order and different levels of anxiety . Twenty three percent of the students studied have severe anxiety while slightly more than half of the sample studied (53.25%) have mild depression with no statistically significant relation between students’ birth order and their level of depression. There is positive significance correlation coefficient between anxiety and depression. It was concluded that there is no relation between birth order and both anxiety and depression syptoms. Thus it was recommended that an educational program for adolescents at schools should be provided to increase their awareness about their needs and problems and how to satisfy their needs and adapt with their problems.
