Abstract Tilapia is one of the most important farmed fish in the world. Great attention has been focused to tilapia culture in recent years. The attributes which make tilapia suitable for fish farming are general hardness, resistance to disease, high yield potentials due to resistant to overcrowding and the ability to withstand low dissolved oxygen levels. Tilapia can also utilize a wide range of natural and artificial feeds, and when reared under aquatic farming practices, represent an excellent and palatable fish with firm white flesh and no intramuscular bones (Pullin and Lowe-McConnell, 1982; Yi et al., 1996). The global production of tilapia is expected to exceed 3.0 million ton in 2010 and estimated to increase to about 8.9 million ton by the year 2020 (Tacon and Metian, 2008). However, the latest fish production statistics in Egypt revealed that tilapia is considered the major cultured specie, they contributed about 74.05% (730837 ton) from the total aquaculture production (986820 ton) in 2011, respectively (GAFRD, 2011).
