Abstract

The purpose of this Study is to examine the family values in the plays of Paula Vogel. The focus is on the family values in Vogel’s plays although she tackles controversial topics in her plays. Vogel is the first woman playwright who writes about AIDS, homosexuality, children’s sexual abuse and incest. Vogel also regards the family as the main pillar in building an ideal structure for a secure, safe and civilized society. Paula Vogel as a professor of literature and Head of Drama Department at Yale University wants to share something with the community. She focuses on family and community values inside the American societies.
Despite the fact that Vogel is one of the most innovative twentieth-century American playwrights, one tends to believe that she has received widespread welcome from reviewers and theater goers.
Many critics consider that her topics are so daring that only men writers can touch but Vogel with her artistic talent and her experience proves to be a wonderful playwright and that is why she has won several awards and prizes. Using comedy mixed with tragedy, adds to the serious purpose of what she wants the audience to think of. In most of her plays, she criticizes social, political and parental performance of the American community.
The study falls into four chapters. Chapter I examines Vogel’s family background, education as well as her career engagement. Chapter II analyzes the family values and begins with an important one: loyalty. Chapter III shows another aspect of the family values. It dramatizes forgiveness in most of her plays and she shows that forgiveness is extremely important inside the family. Chapter IV pictures the importance of the sense of belonging as one of the values which should be available among family members.
The study is hence concluded with a general essay in which the main argument and results are recapitulated to be followed by a detailed bibliography.
