Abstract

The present thesis aims to study the suitability of some Egyptian marbleized limestone facies for ornamentation and preservation purposes based on its characterization and durability. These facies are located at G.Duwi, Wadi Askhar, Wadi Wata, Western Delga, Wadi Abada, Wadi Sieg and Sheikh Fadl. The aim also extended to involve enhancement the properties of marbleized limestone by using some consolidating materials.
The marbleized limestone under investigation can be divided into two main groups depending on the presence or absence of stylolite. Two main microfacies were noticed: (1) skeletal microfacies represented at G.Duwi, Western Delga, Wadi Askhar, Wadi Abada and Sheikh Fadl. (2) oolitic or non skeletal microfacies involving samples of Wadi Wata and Wadi Sieg.
Based on mineralogical and chemical composition of the marbleized limestone facies under investigation G.Duwi can be classified as dolomitic limestone while all others are classified as high- calcium limestone.
It can be noticed from the physico-mechanical investigations and the different durability tests conducted for the selected samples that G.Duwi, Wadi Askhar (ZA) and Sheikh Fadl have the least physico-mechanical average values and also relatively least durable facies against different weathering agents. On the other hand, Wata , Wadi Askhar (ZP) and Sieg have highest physico-mechanical averages as well as the durable limits against the different weathering agents except for the case of firing weathering as Delga faice is more resistance than Wata.
Nanolime is preferable than Paraloid B-72 for consolidation and enhancement of the limits of the physico-mechanical properties of G.Duwi and Sheikh Fadl studied facies where it leads to more advance in average of the physico-mechanical properties compared with Paraloid B-72.
