Abstract

SUMMARY Phytochemical and micropropagation studies on the yellow hornpoppy (Glaucium flavum, family Papaveraceae) Glaucium is a widespread genus of the family Papaveraceae which is characterized by the presence of different classes of isoquinoline alkaloids which is biologically active compounds. So, this thesis comprises phytochemical and micropropagation studies of Glaucium flavum belonging to family Papaveraceae to perform:
1. Brief botanical study of its different organs to facilitate the identification of the plant. 2. Isolation and characterization of its chemical constituents. 3. Micropropagation study of the plant. 4. Comparative HPLC study between wild plant and the produced callus. 5. Biological study of the plant extracts . Thus, the present study was performed in five parts included: brief botanical study, phytochemical study, Micropropagation study and biological screening .Part I Botanical study of Glaucium flavum Cr. A-Macromorphological study of Glaucium flavum Cr. The study was carried out to characterize the plant morphologically; as a result the following characters comprises the main diagnostic features: 1. The plant is a perennial herb and hermaphrodite. 2. The leaves are bluish-grey and coated in a layer of water retaining wax. 3. The flowers are yellow with showy appearance and carrying both male and female sex organs. 4. Fruit is a capsule which bears horn-like protrusions. B- Micromorphological study of Glaucium flavum Cr. The study was carried out to characterize the plant microscopically; as a result the following characters comprises the main diagnostic features: 1. Leaves are dorsiventral with only an upper palisade tissue being discontinuous in the midrib region. 2. The petiole is nearly boat-shaped with parenchymatous cortex with a complete layer of subepidermal collenchymas 3. The young stem is characterized by the presence of an outer epidermis and collenchymatous cortex with a parenchymatous pericycle showing patches of lignified pericyclic fibres .5. The old stem is characterized by the presence of an outer cork followed by sclerenchymatous cortex showing patches of lignified pericyclic fibres. The vascular tissue is formed of a complete ring of an outer phloem and an inner xylem and is transversed by numerous medullary rays. The pith is wide and parenchymatous 6. The root is characterized by the presence of an outer cork followed by several rows of phelloderm. The vascular tissue is formed of a complete ring of an outer phloem and an inner xylem with cambium in between.
