Abstract

With a world context of high oil prices now a day’s and a rate of increase in reserves from new wells discovered is not enough to compensate the rate of extraction, so companies have been working to improve the recovery factor of reserves[1], Many techniques can be used to achieve this target , one of these techniques called radial drilling technique . Radial drilling technique utilizes hydraulic energy to create several lateral horizontal holes in different directions with several lengths, for example up to one hundred meters long ( or may be greater than a 100 mt (328 ft) in some cases) in relatively short time. It has the possibility to make several holes in one horizontal layer or different layers in the same well, The lateral holes are made in two steps, the first step, milling the casing with small bit and the second step is achieving lateral extension by high pressure hydraulic jetting. For evaluation of these techniques, a number of pilot tests were performed in different oil fields, with several scenarios, different diameters and lengths. As a sequences, evaluation of the best way or technique that should be applied . This study presents a very good analysis and an evaluation of the radial drilling techniques that have been made in one of the Egyptian oil field, and presents the best or/and the optimum approaches to perform these types of stimulating oil and gas reservoirs. To perform these objectives, a number of pilot tests which were performed in Egypt in Belayim oil field was selected for this study. The wells used for this study are Well #1, Well # 2, and well #3 which were being in a reservoir with depth 2400 m (7872 ft). The first well was laterally drilled with maximum length of 50 m (164 ft) by six laterals (The six laterals were performed in the same body of sand each one separated by abstract III(one meter)(3.281 feet), and the angle between each two is 90 degrees. The second well used in this study, Well # 2 has a reservoir depth about 2275 m (7462 ft) and 6 laterals have been performed in two different levels, 3 laterals in certain level and the other 3 at another level, all of them were drilled with 50 meter length (164 feet ) and only one was drilled with 90 meter (295 feet). The last well used is well # 3, with a reservoir depth about 2200 meter (7220 feet) and 4 laterals were performed in this well with 50 meter (164 feet) long at two different level. Several experiences have been learned and registered from drilling these 16 laterals in current wells that will help generally for the future radial drilling operational around the world which will consider one of the main objectives from this study moreover the production improvement. from the production point of view, the first well was improved by more than 12.5% increase in production, and the second shows an improve by about 47% increase. The third well shows an improvement by about 12.5 % but for short period.
