Abstract

High quality finishing and polishing can improve the esthetics and longevity of direct tooth-coloured restorations. Rough poorly polished surfaces contribute to staining, plaque accumulation and gingival irritation. Unfortunately, polishing is complicated by the heterogeneous nature of these materials; hard filler particles embedded in a relatively soft matrix.12,13,14 Furthermore, a smooth surface adds to the patients comfort, as any change in surface roughness can be detected by the tip of the tongue.15 Finishing refers to the gross contouring of surfaces of restorations to obtain the desired anatomy. Polishing refers to reduction of the roughness and the scratches created by finishing instruments. These two procedures are however interdependent and cannot be clearly delineated from each other and hence, the term is used as finishing-polishing.
