Abstract

Purpose: Several studies have reported an association between certain human leukocyte antigens and inner ear diseases such as sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and Ménière’s disease (MD) all over the world. The aim of the present study is to analyze the associations of HLA-DRB1* in patients with SSNHL and MD in Egypt.
Materials & Methods: HLA-DRB1* typing was performed from DNA using molecular-based methods on 50 patients with SSNHL, 50 patients with MD and 150 healthy controls.
Results: The data of this study showed a significant association of the allele HLA-DRB1*0403 and the allelic group HLA-DRB1*04 with SSNHL. While the allele HLA-DRB1*1101 and the allelic group DRB1*11 may determine an increased susceptibility to develop MD.
Conclusion: It is concluded that there is an immunologic background of SSNHL and MD. HLA-DRB1*0403 and HLA-DRB1*1101 may influence the susceptibility to develop the SSNHL and MD respectively in Egyptian patients. However, this needs to be verified on a large scale.
