Abstract Chest wall resection and reconstruction is a major undertaking and has the full potential for life-threatening complications. As discussed by Azarow and associates , accurate preoperative assessment is critical because it will allow the detection and treatment of correctable problems.(83) The ability to close large chest wall defects is the main consideration in the surgical treatment of most chest wall afflictions. Excision should not be undertaken if the surgeon does not have the confidence and ability to close the defect.(83) In summary, resection and reconstruction of chest wall lesions can be a challenging endeavor. However, by approaching the problems of each patient with a careful, well-thought plan, the results should be excellent in the majority of patients. Use of expertise of a variety of other specialties, including plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, and pulmonary medicine will greatly facilitate successful results.(83) |
