Abstract
Ferula assafoetida is herbaceous plant of the umbelliferae family. It is oleo gum resin obtained from the rhizome and root of plant. The aqueous extract of the ferula assafoetida gum was chosen for pharmacological and toxicological investigation. Oral LD50 value greater than 5000 mg/kg was obtained indicating the safety of the gum extract for traditional use. The gum extract of the ferula assafoetida had significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects supporting the traditional use of this plant in the treatment of different types of pains and inflammation. The extract had significant diuretic effect as it increases the urine volume of rats as compared with the control group. The extract of Ferula assafoetida significantly protected rats from ethanol-induced ulcer and Aspirin-induced ulcer in rats. Oral administration of Ferula assafoetida extract in rats for 28 successive days had no significant changes on body weight gain, blood criteria, serum enzymatic activity and changes histopathological figure on liver and kidneys was elucidated.
