Abstract Background: Urinary tract infections are the most common medical complication of pregnancy. Asymptomatic bacteriuria is the most prevalent of these infections and it is defined as, the finding of greater than (100,000) colony forming units per mL of urine of a single pathogen in two consecutive, midstream, clean catch urine specimens or one catheterization specimen. Objectives: The aim of this work is to assess the prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria in primi gravid patient during mid trimester in those attending Bolak El dakror hospital obstetric out patient clinic from 1/6/2012 to 25/12/2012. Patients and Methods: This study includes 150 women (divided in two groups, 100 female patients in mid trimester (14-25 weeks) and 50 non pregnant female as a control), Inclusion criteria: primigravida, age from (20-25) and mid trimester pregnancy (14- 25 weeks), Exclusion criteria: women known to be diabetic, women who are immuncompromised as in long term corticosteroid therapy, women using vaginal douches, any type of vaginal bleeding, women already on antibiotic therapy. All patients underwent the following: 1. Full history taking 2. Physical examination 3. Investigation: - Ultrasonography or sonicade to ensure fetal life - Laboratory investigations: hemoglobin levels, urine culture and AB sensitivity. Results: Among the 100 women included in this study, 8 had bacteriuria giving prevalence of 8%. The prevalence of asymptomatic bacteruria was increased patients from low socioeconomic class. Conclusion: It is important that pregnant women are screened for asymptomatic bacteriuria at the first antenatal visit. Keywords: Pregnancy – Antenatal care – Asymptomatic bacteriuria. |
