Abstract In the present study, a total of 10,085 rabbits of different ages from different localities of the Delta were clinically examined for enteritis and diarrhoea. Only 1105 showed these signs with an overall percentage of 10.96%. The morbidity was 15.96% in weaned rabbits, 9.21% in growing, 7.43% in suckling ones and 5.48% in adults. 2-Symptoms on the affected rabbits were depression, ruffled fur, off food and diarrhoea. Sometimes tympany and/or respiratory manifestations were observed. 3-Gross lesions were mainly in the form of enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes (100%); congested, enlarged livers and/or fluid contents and gases in the intestine (78.57%), watery dark brown content of caecum and colon (71.43%), necrosed livers (64.29%); impacted stomach and/or haemorrhage of caeca] wall (50%); empty stomach and/or distended gall bladder (42.86%); as well as congestion of intestinal wall and/or mucous in the stomach or intestine (35.71%). 4-Two hundred and fifty diarrhoeic rabbits (17 suckling, 159 weaned, 63 growing and 11 adults) were examined bacteriologically and parasitologically. Out of examined cases 13 suckling (76.47%), 101 weaned (63.52%), 37 growing (58.73%) and 9 adult rabbits (81.82%) were positive to bacterial isolation. Sixty seven (26.8%) had dietetic or other untested pathogenic problems and 81 (32.4%) were positive to -parasitic infections. 5-Aerobic, anaerobic and mixed bacterial infections were studied in different age groups. 6-Bacterial isolates were morphologically, biochemically and serologically investigated and Proved to be E. coli, Enterobacter agglomerans, Proteus mirabilis, staphylococci and clostridia organisms. 194 Serological identification of the E. coh isolates led to recognition of 026 K60; 055 K59., 0125 : K70; 0126 : K71 and 0128 : KG7. Clostridia are classified into Clostridium pelting-a, clriditim difficile and Clostridium coccoides. Serological characterization of Clostridium perfrirwens indicated that all isolates belonged to type A (using neutralization test with the specific antitoxin). All isolates were toxigenic (lecithinase test). 10-Parasitic infestations were identified as coccidiosis and Cysticercus pisiformis. 11-Frequency and organ distribution of different pathogens were investigated. 12-Pathogensity tests to E. coli serotypes and to p_u_friLgI ens were done using 4-6 weeks old weaned rabbits. 13-Gross and histopathology was studied on experimentally infected and sacrificed rabbits. 14-Sensitivity tests of all isolates of E. coli and Clostridium p_erftLinggLs_ were done in vitro. 15-Monovalent and bivalent bacterins to E. 01026 : K60 and 0125:K70 were prepared and tested as possible vaccines in 30-day-old weaned rabbits and in pregnant does. Protection rates in each of these groups and the ecnomic parameters of these bacterins were studied together with the effects on progney of vaccinated pregnant does. |
