Abstract

This study was conducted in Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Zagazig University, Benha branch - Moshtohor. The objectives of this study were to investigate : 1) the effect of treatment of rice straw with 3% anhydrous ammonia on digestibility and nutritive value of rations containing rice straw plus concentrate mixture 2) the effect of pervious rations on the performance of growing lambs 3) the effect of pervious rations on animal health parameters and production.
Three ton of rice straw treated by 3% anhydrous ammonia in a stack method and sealed for 21 days.
Twenty rahmani lambs averaging 23-26 kgm live body weight were chosen from the herd of El Serw Research Experimental Station, Animal Production Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture. They were alloted in five simillar groups and randomly assigned to feednig five expiremental rations as follows :-
1.Group A fed on ration I which consisted of concentrate mixture and berseem hay.
2.Group B fed on ration II which consisted of concentrate mixture and untreated rice straw.
3.Group C fed on ration III which consisted of concentrate mixture and ammoniated rice straw.
4.Group D fed on ration IV which consisted of concentrate mixture, untreated rice straw and berseem hay.
5.Group E fed on ration V which consisted of concentrate mixture, ammoniated rice straw and berseem hay. The feeding trial lasted for 191 days. On the other hand, the digestibility trails were conducted to determine the nutritive values of the expiremental rations, also rumen parameters, blood constituents, immune respone were conducted to determine the health parameter. At the end of feeding trial, semen quality of rams were evaluated.
At the end of feeding period (191 days), lambs were randomly chosen and were slaughtered to examine the effect of feeding ammoniated rice straw plus conecntrate mixture on carcass quality and microstructure of internal organs.
The results obtained in this study could be summarized as follows :-
1.The crude protein content of rice straw increased from 4.35 to 10.32% when rice straw treated with 3% anhydrous ammonia.
2.The ash content of rice straw treated with 3% anhydrous ammonia decreased from 22.16 to 17.72%.
3.The crude fibre content of rice straw increased from 33.84 to 34.85% by ammoniati on.
4.The digestibility coefficient values for all nutrients of ration containing ammoniated rice straw were higher than those with ration containing untreated straw or berseem hay.
5.Feeding sheep on rations containing ammoniated rice straw had no significant change in rumenal pH, total volatile fatty acids and individual fatty acids including acetic, propionic., butyric, isobutyric, valeric and iso-valeric acids and acetic / propionic ratio.
6.The highest values of ruminal ammonia concentration were recorded
for the ration containing ammoniated rice straw than untreated materials.
7.The long term feeding of ration containing ammoniated rice straw had no adverse effect on R B Cs, Hb and P CV values.
8.The long term feeding of rations containing ammoniated straw
showed normal performance of liver and Kidney functions and buffer system of blood.
9.Feeding sheep on ammoniated rice straw had no adverse effect on glucose level and triglycerides in sheep blood.
10.Long term feeding of rations containing ammoniated rice straw had no bad effect on amount of serum DNA and RNA.
11.The immune response of sheep to rations containing ammoniated rice straw could be summarized as follows :-
(a)The ration containing ammoniated rice straw had no bad effect
on total serum protein, gamma globulin and total leucocytic count.
(b)The long tenm feeding of ammoniated rice straw did not suppresse the lymphocyte response to mitogen PHA.
