Abstract

The concept of stress has developed decades ago and has always been an area of interest and research, Stress is proved to have a strong relation with various physical and psychiatric disorders and even plays a role in the pathogenesis of these disorders therefore the DSM IV TR edition defines psychosocial stressor as any life event or life change that may be associated temporally (and perhaps) causally with the onset, occurrence or exacerbation of a mental disorder. There are a number of ways in which stress can impact on the individual to increase the risk for psychopathology including effects on patterns of interpersonal interaction which may shape for later psychopathology, effects on neuroendocrine and neurotransmitter functioning, effects on gene expression and effects on affective and cognitive processing. This review discussed the concept of stress and its impact in the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders, the review was divided into four chapters. The first chapter reviewed the concept of stress and its psychological aspects as it discussed the historical development of the concept of stress among scientists, also the meaning of stressors, types of stress response and the role of stress mediators in the interaction between stressors and people while in the second chapter, the relation between stress and psychiatric disorders was reviewed. In the third chapter, the neurobiological mechanisms of stress implicated in pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders were illuminated as it reviewed the role of neurotransmitters and the structural changes induced by stress. Finally in the fourth chapter the role of gene-stress interaction was high lightened such as the effect of stress on candidate genes and on DNA methylation.
