Abstract

The present study was planned to clarify the oxidative stress resulted in gamma radiation exposure, thioacetamide intoxication or its combination on some biochemical and histological parameters in rats,as will as, the prophylactic and therapeutic trials by Ginkgo biloba extract supplementation . One hundred and ten of male rats were divided into (11) equal groups ( 10 ) rats each as following : control , Ginkgo biloba , γ – irradiated , γ – irradiated Ginkgo biloba protected , γ – irradiated Ginkgo biloba treated , thioacetamide, thioacetamide Ginkgo biloba protected, thioacetamide Ginkgo biloba treated ,
γ – irradiated thioacetamide, γ – irradiated thioacetamide Ginkgo biloba protected and treated groups . The antioxdative parameters in blood and liver tissues , liver function parameters in serum and some tissue damage parameters were measured . The combination of γ-radiation and thioacetamide exhibited a sever oxidative stress among all intoxicated groups indicated by the highest increase in MDA, NO, TNF-α, hydroxyproline, DNA fragmentation percentage and tTG activity as well as the highest decrease in SOD, CAT, GSH-Px activities and GSH concentration in blood and liver tissues. Oral administration of Ginkgo biloba extract in a dose of 100 mg/kg b.wt. either for protection or treatment improved the adverse biochemical and histological changes by gamma irradiation exposure and/or TAA intoxication in blood and liver. The protection trials were more effective than the therapeutic one .
