Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dental loupe and
headlamp in detecting the MB2 canal in extracted maxillary first molars.
100 extracted mature maxillary first molars were randomly
selected for this study. After cleaning of the teeth and taking preoperative
radiograph, they were mounted in resin blocks and rhomboidal-shaped
access cavities were prepared. The floor of the pulp chamber was
explored to locate the main root canal orifices.
Each tooth was subjected to five detection methods to detect the
MB2 canals. Group I, II, III, IV and V were the result of using unaided
vision, headlamp and 3.5 magnifying dental loupe, unaided vision
following the use of start X # 2 ultrasonic tip, headlamp and 3.5
magnifying dental loupe following the use of start X #2 ultrasonic tip,
and clearing technique detection methods respectively.
The transparent teeth were viewed through stereomicroscope and
mesiobuccal root canal systems were categorized according to Weine and
Verrtucci classification
The number of canals that were detected by each method was
recorded and the results were statistically analyzed using Z-test.
The results of this study proved that using headlamp and 3.5
magnifying dental loupe with or without Start X #2 ultrasonic tip
significantly facilitate detection of MB2 in maxillary firs molars.
