Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of early versus delayed oral feeding after cesarean section on gastrointestinal functions .
This randomized controlled study was conducted at Benha University hospital and Elnil hospital for health insurance. It included 100 women with term pregnancy who were undergoing a planned or intrapartum uncomplicated cesarean section performed under general anesthesia and were divided into 2 groups: group 1 (early feeding group) included 50 women received soft diet (jelly) 4 hours after surgery and then regular diet 8 hours after surgery group 2 (delayed feeding group): included 50 women received soft diet (jelly) 12 hours after surgery and then regular diet 16 hours after surgery it.
Our exclusion criteria were: (1) History of bowel surgery.
(2) Maternal disease. (3) Previous cesarean section or myomectomy . (4) Intraoperative or immediate postoperative complications.
Every patient was subjected to: 1) Informed consent.2) Regular examination three times daily until discharge..3) Assessment of. (A) Time interval in hours from the end of surgery to passing flatus. (B) Time interval in hours from the end of surgery to first bowel sounde .(C) Duration of hospital stay in days. (D) Incidence of anorexia, nausea, vomiting or abdominal distension.

Our study had showed that there were no significant differences between both groups (early feeding group) and (delayed feeding group) as regards age, gestational age and gravidity. Also there were no significant differences between the two groups as regards preoperative fasting period in hours and duration of anesthesia in minutes. But there was a significant difference between both groups (early feeding group) and (delayed feeding group) as regards duration of hospitalization which was significantly shorter in early feeding group than delayed feeding group .Also there were significant difference between both groups as regards time of hearing intestinal sound and time of first passage of flatus, which were significantly shorter in the early feeding group than the delayed feeding group. Also There were no significant difference between both group as regards postoperative gastrointestinal complications as nausea ,vomiting, abdominal distention and cramps.
