Abstract

Left ventricular relaxation and filling are impaired in patients with hypertension, and such impairment is more pronounced in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy - ñl though most hypertensive persons are asymptomati c , impaired relaxation and filling can be important determinantes of cardiac symptoms, as it has been observed that congestive heart failure can occur in some hypertensive patients with normal systolic performance as a consequence of reduced left ventri cul ar diastolic function, Whether relaxation and filling alterations can be pharmacologically reversed in hypertensive patients is controversial -
Yerapamil is a calcium channel—•blocker The effects of verapamil on diastolic function have been widely studied in patients with hypertrophic cardi omyopathy. In such patients, it enhances left ventricular relaxation and filling.
THE AIM OF THIS WORK is to assess the effects of iv. verapamil on left ventricular diastolic properties in hypertensive individuals using echo— doppler system.
