Abstract

Reinforced concrete continuous beams are increasly used in bridges, offshore structures, Tunnels and many different structural and housing applications all over the world. Many reinforced concrete facilities are subjected to static or dynamic loads or both during their service life. So understood of the structural behavior of these structures under static cyclic loading are very essential owing to these structures express a large part of economy and GDP of any country. This thesis investigates the structural behaviour of strengthened RC continuous beams under static cyclic loads using near surface mounted (NSM) technique. In this research, an experimental program consists of testing nine continuous RC beams (two control beams and seven strengthened beams). Steel round bars, steel square bars, stainless steel round bars and stainless steel square bars were used for flexural strengthening of tested beams using NSM technique. The investigated variables in this study were strengthening materials (type and geometry). Beam models were tested and subjected to cyclic loads till failure. Structural performance of the tested beams and modes of failure were presented and discussed in this research.
The test results confirm that NSM technique can be used significantly to increase the flexure capacity of continuous RC beams, with different efficiency that varies depending on the selected materials. Finite element analysis using ANSYS program was applied to study the behaviour of the tested beams using 3D analysis. from comparison between experimental results and numerical analysis ANSYS was proved to be accurate total to express the structural behaviour of strengthened continuous reinforced concrete beams subjected to cyclic loading.
