Abstract

Abstract The aim of the current study was to determine the effect of using dietary regimen and exercises in conjunction with or without mechanical ear acupuncture on weight control for women with morbid obesity. Materials and method; An experimental research design was used in this study along for ten months from the first of September 2011 to the end of June 2012, total 60 adult female patients diagnosed with morbid obesity were selected from the pain outpatient clinic of Menofia University Hospital, Egypt. Tools; Data was collected in this study through using four tools; tool (I) Structured interview schedule/knowledge assessment questionnaire, tool (II) physiological measurements, tool (III) nutritional assessment questionnaire and tool (IV) compliance assessment (outcomes measurement) questionnaire; all tools were developed by the researcher after reviewing of the related literature except point 4 in part 2 of tool II was adopted. Results; revealed that There were significantly lower measurements of weight, MAC, BMI and TSF in both study and control groups at pre-teaching than post-teaching. Of both study and control groups 90%, 96.7% had good knowledge level, 80%,73.3% had moderate joint pain and 93.3% had fair dietary history in both groups. There were lower joint pain levels in study group than control group. Conclusions; the application of ear acupuncture, in conjunction with a reducedcalorie diet and walking exercises, is more effective in treating morbid obesity. The higher the use of ear acupuncture the lower the body weight as well as all other anthropometric measurements (MAC, BMI and TSF). Also, one can say that the higher knowledge score, the higher the compliance score. The higher the compliance, the lower the body weight, the higher the ability of doing daily living activities more easily, the lower joints’ pain, and the lower the dependency. Recommendations; instead of using traditional therapy for weight reduction alone, efforts should be made to insure that mechanical ear acupuncture must become an effective part of the morbid obesity patient’s treatment.
