Abstract

Although our awareness and understanding of viral hepatitis has risen dramatically over the last 4 decades (Seeff et al., 1992). It was known that post transfusion non-A, non – B hepatitis could be transmitted to chimpanzees, and from this animal and from the plasma of known infected blood donors a plasma sample with high infectivity became available (Sherlock and Dooley, 1997). Hepatitis C virus (HCV was recognized in 1975 when Feinstone et al., demonstrated that the majority of transfusion associated hepatitis cases by an agent other than HAV or HBV and it was parenterally transmissible to chimpanzees. In 1989, scientists at Chiron Corporation in Japan cloned and sequenced the genome of HCV and diagnostic tests were developed shortly thereafter Choo et al., 1989).
