Abstract

This study aimed to find out the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy on social anxiety in schizophrenic patients. Research design: A quasi_experimental design was utilized in this study. Setting: The study was carried out at El Maamoura hospital for psychiatric medicine in Alexandria. Subjects: The subjects of the study were 50 hospitalized schizophrenic patients, 25 patients as a study group and 25 patients as a control group, and fulfilling the following criteria: have moderate & /or severe social anxiety in both the brief social phobia scale and the social interaction anxiety scale, all patients are free from diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular, renal, liver and endocrine diseases and agree to participate in the study Tools of data collection: Patient’s demographic and clinical data structured interview schedule, The Brief Social Phobia Scale (BSPS and The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS): group. Results: the score of the brief social phobia and the social interaction anxiety were decreased after completion of the cognitive behavioral therapy in both the study and control group, while the mean difference of the brief social phobia and the social interaction anxiety was higher in the study group than the control group Conclusion: cognitive behavioral therapy has a positive effect on decreasing social anxiety among schizophrenic. Recommendations: The study recommended Apply the cognitive behavioral therapy as a basic treatment with pharmacological drugs for schizophrenic patients with social anxiety.
