Abstract

Summary
- This thesis was carried on two popular ornamental local plants, Bougainvillea alba (Family Nyctaginaceae) and Philodendron selloum (Family Araceae) to study their chemical content and biological activities.
- from the methanol extract of the flowers of Bougainvillea alba plant five compounds were isolated and identified as 3’,4’,6 - trimethoxy, 5 – hydroxyl 7-prenyl 3-O- (feruloyl (1→2)- rhamnpyranosyl) flavone (1), 3-O β-D-glucopyranosyl oleanolic acid 28-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→3”) β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→3”’) α-L –xylopyrenoside (2), Lepidolide (3), E feruloyl 3-O- Coumaroyl α-L Rhamnopyranoside (4) and 4-methoxy , 3,5-dihydroxy, 6- trans cinnameoyl β-D –glucopyranoside (5).
- The oil content of the total flower methanol extract of Bougainvillea alba plant was isolated and oil fractions isolated from column chromatography through fractionation process were analyzed using GC-Ms spectrometry and identified.
- from the methanol extract of total plant of Philodendron selloum plant three compound were isolated and identified as p-hydroxyphenyl ethyl β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→2), β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→3), 4-O-trans caffeoyl- O-α-L- rhamnopyranoside (1), 2-phenyl ethyl 4-O-trans caffeoyl- O-α-L- rhamnopyranoside (2) and 2,3 dimethoxy-phenyl ethyl 4-O-trans caffeoyl-β-D-glucopyranosyl (3).
- The compounds isolated from the two plants were analyzed using physical, chemical and spectroscopic analysis as proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (1H, 13C NMR) and electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS).
- The Cytotoxicity of both plant were carried using brine shrimp test and HEPG2 cell line test, The chloroform extract of P. selloum showed the most potent toxic effect at LC50 = 16 µg/ml followed by its methanol extract, petroleum ether and ethyl acetate extract. Methanol, petroleum ether and ethyl acetate extract of B. alba give the same potent cytotoxic effect at LC50 = 40 µg/ml against brine shrimp larvae. Both different extracts and the isolated compounds showed high cytotoxic effect against HEPG2 cell line.
- The antioxidant activity of both plant extracts was measured, the different extracts of both plants showed week antioxidant activity by comparison with standard compounds.
